Occam’s Razor

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Perhaps you are familiar with principle of Occam’s Razor… It says, basically, that the simplest answer is most likely the best one. It’s really fun to bring up in conversation, partly because it’s easy to find uses for (”where did you get those groceries?” “Occam’s razor would suggest at the grocery store.)”, but also because it sounds really cool to say. It’s got “razor” right in there for some reason. Not statement, not maxim or philosophy. Razor! I can only imagine that when 14th century Franciscan friar William of Occam coined it, he chose to call it a “razor.” It makes his philosophy sound powerful and irrefutable. Occam’s Razor sounds like the most dangerous, awesome philosophy ever. Its continued citation and popularity as something brought up at post-college Ivy league parties is probably due to its potent, evocative name. Occam must have known this.

As an amateur philosopher myself, I recently came up with this gem,

“It is better to have two things than one or none.”

which I’m calling “Ryan’s Motherfucking Parable of Death” in hopes of it similarly becoming a philosophical mainstay.
